Hedgehog
=================================
Hopefully simple one, the main thread is Rieko doing some felt-cutting crafts with interspersed shots of other slice-of-life activities as she works for a few days on a felt image of herself and her grumpy pet hedgehog, all the while trying to cheer up Hedgehog, given the lyrics translation.

Ideas
‾‾‾‾
– She lines up the scissors in an open position and holds them upright, then watches as Hedgehog slowly climbs up something and jumps off down onto the scissors to cut the felt.
– She’s singing to herself and grabbing different pieces of felt without looking, suddenly her eyes fly open as she winces. Cut to her hand in the pile of felt getting poked by the spines of Hedgehog, who has decided to plop down there.
– She has an apple she’s munching on as she works, grabbing it periodically and taking a bite without breaking her concentration. Hedgehog plops down next to the apple and pricks her lips when she unwittingly picks it up the next time she reaches for her apple.
– She pulls out one of Hedgehog’s spines and innocently looks up and away with a shrug, hiding the stolen spine in her hand as Hedgehog’s sleeping eyes pop open and spin around to glare at her accusingly. It begrudgingly settles back into its rest, prompting Rieko to surreptitiously slip out the spine and use it at a sewing (needle/pin?)
– She’s asleep on the couch in the dark as she and the sleeping Hedgehog on top of her head are illuminated by the colorful flicker from a television. Rieko’s head slowly droops to the side and her eyes creep open in dim response to Hedgehog’s sliding off and being dealt the rude awakening of splashing into the steaming teacup she was loosely still grasping. As her cup dips in receipt of the unlikely swimmer, Rieko jolts awake, pulling Hedgehog out quickly and blowing on its burned bottom to cool it down.
– She’s scrubbing a dirty pan in the sink, frustrated that her hand is not removing the mess effectively, and grabs Hedgehog to use as a more course scrubber.
– She ties Hedgehog spines-out to a ruler and uses it was a back scratcher.
– She’s using Hedgehog to brush her hair.
– She’s playing piano and the loose sheet music keeps sliding down, grabs Hedgehog and pins the sheet music to the stand using its spines.
– She’s using Hedgehog as a little broom to sweep some dust into a dustpan.
– She’s holding a vase in her hand, blows a little cloud of dust off the mantle, uses Hedgehog to dust the rest of the dust off the surface.
– She hangs Hedgehog on a Christmas tree as an ornament or tree topper.
– She and Hedgehog go into a streetside photo booth and get four pictures taken 1) She’s smiling and Hedgehog is turned backwards 2) She’s looking at Hedgehog with frustration after realizing it’s backwards 3) Struggling to get Hedgehog to look at the camera as it kicks wildly 4) Same thing, falling down out of the the frame
– In Jun Okamoto’s shop trying on clothes, they put Hedgehog in some clothes as well, to its chagrin. Kotringo’s photographer, Masako Nakagawa (中川正子), and Jun are there as Kotringo is trying on outfits and the three of them all judge Hedgehog’s outfits.

– Tell Jun and Masako they’re in the animation once it’s done. Pretty sure Masako speaks English, but not sure about either of them, so better get the tweet message translated. Also contact Masako through her website, since it doesn’t look like she’s used Twitter in a while. “@junokamoto_ @masako_n Hi. I wanted to let you know that both of you appear at and of this animation I made for Kotringo’s birthday. Thank you for your hard work!
– こんにちは。お知らせしておきたかったのですが、私がコトリンゴさんの誕生日用に作ったこのアニメーションの、1:33と3:34の部分にお二人が登場しています。お疲れ様です!
– During the fashion show performance, Hisashi Suto (https://twitter.com/bassistoh) and Kaoru Suzuki (鈴木郁, can’t find a Twitter account) are playing bass and drums.
– “@bassistoh Hi. I wanted to let you know that you and 鈴木郁さん appear at of this animation I made for Kotringo’s birthday. Thank you for your hard work!
– こんにちは。お知らせしておきたかったのですが、私がコトリンゴさんの誕生日用に作ったこのアニメーションの、3:30のところに須藤さんと鈴木郁さんが登場しています。お疲れ様です!
– “須藤さん” was initially translated as “あなた” in the above message. Switched to Hisashi’s last name to be safe.

Storyboard
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
2 measures – Rieko’s right index finger pushes the door of a cassette deck closed and presses the play button. The music starts playing. Her left hand has been holding the cassette case which has Bill’s disclaimer on the insert card. Her felt-crafting paraphernalia is strewn across the desk.
2 measures – Rieko leans the boom box forward to angle it down at Hedgehog, who is sleeping on a small stack of felt squares. The speakers bounce to the beat and emit little sound lines as Hedgehog is startled awake, then narrows its eyes unhappily, and finally turns its back to the speakers and walks off to the left of the screen. Rieko’s smiling face bobs to the beat it the background.
2 measures – 90 degrees left of the previous shot showing Hedgehog’s back, Hedgehog plops down slothfully near the edge of the desk. Rieko’s head pops in on the left side, beaming down at Hedgehog in sync with the first high electric piano chord. Hedgehog flops away from her and over to the right, and she pops up on the right side with a similar expression and timing as she moves her hands in to pick Hedgehog up.
2 measures – Rieko cradles Hedgehog up to her face and bounces to the beat as she closes her eyes and gently nuzzles her grumpy Hedgehog with her cheek.
1 measure – Hedgehog puffs out its spines with the piano hit and pricks Rieko, causing her to recoil with three spines sticking out of her rosied cheek. Hedgehog indignantly hops out of her hand screen left.
1 measure – Hedgehog lands on top of the sewing kit box, arches its back to ruffle its spines back into position, and slumps down into a slit-eyed smolder.
1 measure – Closeup of Rieko’s cheek as she pulls out the three spines to the hits, then brings her hand down as the camera spins 180 degrees right and displays the desk top
3 measures – On the downbeat of each measure, Rieko’s hand presses a single spine into a spine-sized line of glue on a patch of felt to complete a small fan shape. Hedgehog watches disinterestedly from atop its perch.
1 measure – Rieko shoots an injured look at Hedgehog from her periphery, her inflamed cheek magically dressed with three bandages. Hedgehog spins its back to her in a humph.
2 measures – Rieko slides out screen left and is missing for a bit.
1 measure – A flash of frames show Rieko’s hands bringing down her sweater around Hedgehog. Everything is black except for Hedgehog’s eyes, which meander around to assess the situation.
1 measure – The darkness is pulled away as Rieko sweeps the sweater up and scampers across the room toward the doorway on the far wall.
2 measures – Rieko using Hedgehog to scrub a baking sheet in her sudsy sink, ゴシゴシ
2 measures – Rieko using Hedgehog, tied spines-out to a ruler, to scratch her back, カリカリ
2 measures – Rieko using Hedgehog to brush her hair, サラサラ
2 measures – Rieko with Hedgehog strapped belly down to form a makeshift eye mask as she is sprawled out on her bed, snoring in the breeze of a fan that ruffles her pajamas in the summer heat, グーグー
1 measure – Rieko gingerly leans a single-sheet, folded sheet music booklet from her electric keyboard top to the wall behind it, hands splayed open and hovering close as she sees if it will hold.
1 measure – The music slithers down, to her annoyance.
1 measure (6 / 4) – Rieko grabs Hedgehog and staples the music to the wall across the top of the page, each equidistant pound leaving behind a few spines and the final blow leaving Hedgehog hanging to the wall by its back. Rieko lays into the keys as the chord plays on beat 5.
2 measures – From the second shot’s perspective, Rieko plays the piano expressively. Likely need to have stuff on the desk obscuring where her hands will be to cut down on animation.
2 measures – Hedgehog, unenthused as it hangs to the wall, quietly watches as the notes Rieko is playing appear in time on the staves of the skewered sheet music.
Last beat and a half – Rieko’s right hand runs down the keys in a closeup.
2 measures – Rieko finishes playing with the chord and slowly reaches up, pulling Hedgehog out from the wall. She abruptly slams her hands back down on the keys to continue the next two chords, Hedgehog clinging to the top of her right hand fearfully. She softly gets up and starts walking away after the second chord, only to lunge back into position and flamboyantly play the next chord.
2 measures – Closeup of Rieko’s right hand (fingers out of frame) as she runs up the keys, bouncing Hedgehog along on her wrist.
2 measures – Rieko sits at a table outside as she contentedly munches on a strawberry crepe, a neglected dab of whipped cream clinging to her left dimple. Hedgehog perches beside her in a clip-to-tabletop highchair, holding its small crepe stiffly and as grumpy as ever.
2 measures – Closeup of Hedgehog’s unchanged pose. The crepe is slowly slipping out of its grasp until it plops limply to the highchair tray, unfurling to spill its contents.
2 measures – Rieko walks bouncily down the sidewalk as she drags Hedgehog on a leash behind her.
1 measure – Closeup profile of Hedgehog being dragged across the ground, completely unwilling to participate.
1 measure – Rieko approaches Jun Okamoto’s Daikanyama store waving as Masako clutches her camera and fans them hither, Japanese-style.
4 measures – Rieko poses in new outfits every two beats as Masako snaps pictures and Jun watches, accumulating the previous outfit in his arms when Rieko switches to the next one. On the last two switches, she is dancing to the beat.
3 measures – Hedgehog similarly “poses” in outfits every two beats, though its positions are reticent and generally unflattering.
3 beats – Rieko, Masako, and Jun are the panel of judges for Hedgehog’s demonstration. Rieko is already holding a “10” sign above her head on the cut, Masako lowers her camera and raises a “10” sign with her left hand on beat two, and Jun raises a much-deliberated “9.5” sign while still pensive on beat three.
1 beat – A cash register spits out a receipt and spins to “¥¥¥¥¥¥” on a rotary-style price display.
2 measures – Rieko dramatically stumbles to the bass rhythm out of the shop, burdened by the weight of both her purchase and the several bags of clothes she is wrangling. She tumbles to rest on a fortuitous throne of totes that collects underneath her.
2 measures – She pulls her pocketbook open wearily, her eyes following the ascent of a moth that flits out.
3 measures – From a profile of the throne, Rieko tosses her empty pocketbook feebly to the first three beats. Cut to a pose leaning slightly more toward the camera as Rieko drops Hedgehog from above the open pocketbook, Hedgehog lands inside, and Rieko zips it shut to the second measure’s first beat. Cut to the initial position where Rieko tosses the now heavy pocketbook with a smile on her face, the first three beats being tosses and the fourth showing Hedgehog’s spines puff the pocketbook out in protest.
1 measure – The camera sweeps up to the sky scrolling past power lines that crisscross the screen.
6 measures – These power lines continue moving past as the camera keeps rising and they begin to have photos of Rieko and Hedgehog clipped to them using clothespins.
2 measures – A final line comes in from the top of the screen as the scroll slows to a stop. Rieko’s hands clip a photo to it.
2 measures – From atop her desk chair that she has moved over into the dining room, Rieko proudly gestures to the line of photos she’s just finished stringing around the top of the wall. On beat 3 of measure 2, she realizes Hedgehog is missing, looking down at the table where it previously sat.
1 measure – Rieko rummages under the table, finding no Hedgehog there.
1 measure – Rieko, close to the camera, calls out Hedgehog’s name.
3 measures – She scours the shot in two-beat segments: top drawer, under sink, middle drawer, under pillow, in slipper, out window
1 measure – She eases herself down from the counter, haphazardly looking down into the sink before turning and beginning to walk away. She stops in her tracks as she realizes what she just saw and whips back around to the sink on the final few frames.
1 measure – Looking up out of the drain, Rieko pivots down into view as she swings her head over the sink. She exclaims Hedgehog’s name on the second piano hit.
1 measure – Looking down into the drain, Hedgehog is stuck headfirst in the hole, only its tail and a few spines stick up above the lip. A clear tube lands around the opening on the second piano hit.
2 beats – Hedgehog’s rump starts to vibrate and ascend slightly up the now-trembling tube.
Until the four notes – Rieko toils over the sink as she two-handedly divines Hedgehog out of the drain using a vacuum cleaner.
Four notes – On note one, Rieko jolts back as the air erupts with spines and Hedgehog shoots up the tube, creating a bulge as it travels. On note three, the vacuum cleaner’s bag compartment door bursts open and Hedgehog careens out. On note four, Hedgehog flops onto the counter facing outward, its hind legs hanging over its head.
Dakara – Closeup of Hedgehog as its scowl relents. Its eyes open into ovals and it sees its lack of spines. Its legs fall backward when the first piano note hits, settling onto its stomach before Rieko’s fingers swoop in and bop three spines back into its head in time with NO-ko-SHI toKO.
Sekai no – Hedgehog pops to its feet, suavely grooving to the beat.
Snare – Hedgehog snaps into a flamboyant sky-point.
1 measure – Hedgehog “disco point dances” to the beat.
2 measures – Hedgehog “Peanuts look-sideways-and-bounce” dances as Rieko, crouched so her head hangs just above the counter, gently bobs along.
2 measures – The vacuum tube jitters as it sucks up the peppering of stray spines in the sink. Hedgehog watches from near the faucet.
2 measures – Hedgehog, on all fours, pushes up the faucet handle up with its rear and pushes down on a bottle with its front legs to dispense some soap into the sink. It then jumps over the bottle and bellyflops onto a sponge, wrapping its legs around it and looking up at Rieko invitingly.
4 measures – Half-time onomatopoeia loops from before, but each is modified to incorporate spineless Hedgehog: holding Hedgehog who’s hugging a sponge, Hedgehog strapped to the stick and vigorously running its legs to scratch (カリ text converted from spines to little legs), holding Hedgehog who’s hugging the back of a hairbrush, using a normal eye mask while Hedgehog is sprawled out on the bed.
1 measure – 09_00 piano and table background, Hedgehog strikes a practice fashion pose using the table as its stage. Rieko, sitting at the left side of the table, claps energetically upon the striking.
1 measure – 01_00 look out at piano, Rieko leans steeply to her right, both hands playing chorded tremolos. She cranes her neck back to the left to watch Hedgehog holding an arabesque and jumping up and down to play a bass note on beat.
1 measure – 09_06 look at desk from piano, Rieko hunches over the desk, her chair moved to the left side and Hedgehog sitting with dangling legs atop her left shoulder. Her right arm wiggles as she places the finishing touches before in the last few frames grabbing her work and swiftly brining it up to her eye level.
1 measure – Rieko’s hands snap to the sides of the screen as she proudly spreads taut her promotional felt creation. She admires it with a smile and then looks to her left peripherally to see Hedgehog throw its hands up in celebration.
2 measures – The felt sign looks out the side window of Jun Okamoto’s shop, heads of people outside in the entrance line filed across the screen below it. Little depictions of Rieko and Hedgehog are present below their respective names on the sign, Hedgehog’s stage name revealed to be “ハリンゴ” by its credit. The sign reads:
Special Live!!
コンサート!ファッションショー!
コトリンゴ x ハリンゴ
7/17[水]
17:00 open 17:17 start
charge: ¥0 / 予約 • ¥0 / 当日
2 measures – Crammed in a corner of the shop, Rieko, Hisashi, and Kaoru respectively play their electric piano, bass, and drums to the music. Hedgehog’s spine- and felt-craft fashion show stage sits on the A0 end of Rieko’s keyboard facing the audience. A felt red carpet rolls out from the darkness between the curtains and Hedgehog struts out swankily.
4 measures – In two-beat increments, the shot bounces between Hedgehog striking bold poses in different outfits and the back of the crowd where Masako and Jun stand.
– Hedgehog tilts its head to its right and places its right hand on its hip.
– Masako snaps a picture plainly and Jun looks on with quiet pride, holding his chin.
– Hedgehog leans on its right elbow as it lays on the ground, left leg bent up in “The Lionel”.
– Masako snaps a picture from over Jun’s shoulder as he turns back to look at her, gesturing at Hedgehog with a surprised but approving upward palm.
– Hedgehog leans away from the camera, hands on its knees as it looks back over its shoulder.
– Masako leans over the heads of the back row to snap a picture. Jun clutches his chest and presses a handkerchief to his forehead in the throes of awe.
– Hedgehog throws its head back and whips open its coat in a wide stance, unabashedly exposing its innocuous “naked” front to the audience.
– Masako’s camera hangs neglected from her neck as she, flushed and mortified, is busy shielding Jun’s eyes from the spectacle. Jun’s right hand blindly reaches over to the camera and snaps a picture.
Last hits – The shot cuts between Hedgehog busting out poses on the drum hits and a closeup of Rieko’s right hand playing the electric piano notes.
Last flourish – Hedgehog jumps and lands on Bb1 in its practiced arabesque, holding it as the note hangs. Its raised leg then slides down to Eb1 as it crouches and the camera raises just enough get the keys out of frame. Hedgehog pushes off, running across the keys on all fours until it reaches the top end and jumps off acrobatically. Hedgehog disappears off the right side of the screen as the camera halts and shows the initial felt craft Rieko was working on: a Hedgehog version of her “Merry Christmas” bird piece that says “Happy Birthday”.

The person who I really like is a hedgehog
The most crabby person in town
The eyes that stare out of the long pincushion
Are quietly watching everything

The person who I really like is a hedgehog
The most crabby person in town
Even after listening to great music
They always have some sort of complaint

But the world is more simple
And when you look at it that way, it’s easy

“So that the people of the world don’t become crabby
I am the last crabby person”

A typical excuse
One
Then another
Take off the spines! Hedgehog

The person who I really like is all alone
The loneliest person in town

If you take the spines off of a hedgehog
It couldn’t even become a normal mouse
That’s why I’m going to leave 3 spines

“So that the people of the world don’t become crabby
I myself am the last crabby person”

A typical excuse

Then another
Take off the spines! Hedgehog
