Old project logs

When working on a personal project, I’ll usually accumulate a pile of unorganized artifacts that were used during the production. Going forward, I’ll add those in project-specific posts when there is enough information to warrant posting. For now, this is a dump of some from older projects.

Again, colored marks denote that the associated shot had been filmed. Since most shots were composited from multiple instruments, the colors were significant: blue for bass, yellow for drums, green for piano, red for vocals, and purple for “paper” me doing some action.

The music in the background for most of the video is my simple version of Junichi Masuda’s “The Road to Viridian City – from Palette” (from Red/Blue/Yellow soundtrack).
The song at the end is “Strong As an Oak” from Watsky’s album “Cardboard Castles”.

Easter Eggs

You may have noticed some out-of-place characters. Here’s a list of when they appeared, who they are, and what they’re from.

  • 0:46 — Luke and Lisa (The Sacred Blacksmith)
  • 0:47 — Yui and Gita (K-ON!)
  • 0:57 — Andrew and Vriska (Homestuck)
  • 1:04 — C.C. and Cheese-kun (Code Geass)
  • 1:09 — Vivian (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)
  • 1:34 — Appa (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
  • 1:52 — G.R.O.S.S. meeting and Hobbes in the tree (Calvin and Hobbes)
  • 1:56 — Commander Keen’s blasters and helmet (Commander Keen video games)
  • 2:06 — Toy Box spaceship (Planetes)
  • 2:19 — Annie and Tibbers (League of Legends)
  • 2:26 — Ralts (Pokemon)
  • 3:10 — Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)
  • 4:17 — The snowman’s face is BK-201’s mask (Darker than Black)
  • 4:27 — Kaori Nishidake (SSX video games, specifically SSX3)
  • 4:47 — Excalibur (Soul Eater)
  • 6:32 — Ikuko, Mito, and Daisuke (Clammbon)
  • 6:44 — F.L.U.D.D. (Super Mario Sunshine)
  • 8:16 — Grodus and an X-naut (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)

Bonus

  • The battle menubar at the top of the screen, first shown at 2:55, shows Mario has 413 coins. Blah blah blah, Homestuck reference, etc.
  • The closing measures of the piano at 8:18 are a direct nod to the ending of 雨の日 (Ameno Hi) by the ever-brilliant Kotringo, with the last 6 notes obviously being the classic Mario “1-UP” sound

The images here are broken into a couple sections.

  1. Painstakingly writing down the timing and phonetic pronunciation of the lyrics, since I did not know Japanese at all.
  2. Noting what instruments needed video shot and the corresponding measure numbers.

A Zelda Love Song

There is hardly anything to post here, but it’s included simply because this was the first time I recorded multi-track drums, and while figuring out the setup, I jotted down this guide for my 8-input interface. It has been referenced ever since as a starting point whenever I’m setting up.

Easter Eggs / Subtleties

Watch the video a few times while noting any Easter Eggs or subtle things you see. Then compare it to the master list below and see how well you did. Note that some “really obvious” MSPA-related things are not counted as Easter Eggs, like “Hey, that music sounds like Elevatorstuck!” or “During the battle sequence, there were STRIFE command boxes and sylladex cards!”. “Subtleties” refer to things that aren’t necessarily Easter Eggs, but are small, unrelated things that very observant people may notice. When you’re done, match your noticed-number to your title on the EASTER EGGELADDER below.

Note: This is certainly way too difficult.

EASTER EGGELADDER

0: OLIVE GARDEN MANAGER
1 – 3: SKINNY VRISKA
4 – 7: FANCYSANTA OGLER
8 – 12: HOT-DIGGITY DINO
13 – 16: ANDREW’S FAMILYSIZE CHAPSTICK HOLSTER
17 – 21: HARD-BOILED EASTER EGG DETECTIVE EXTRAORDINARY
22 – 26: MSPA THESPIAN
27 – 30: “SUPER FROG” PUBLISHER CREDIT
31: FEDORA FREAKISHLY FINE
32: DRILLGORG’S LEFT FOOT THAT’S IMPRESSIVE
33: BYROBOTIC REFERENCE EXCAVATOR STATUS CONFIRMED
34: STEWART CLAMMINGTON’S HIRED GUN
35 + Bonus: YOU MUST BE CHEATING, EVEN I CAN’T GET THIS HIGH.

List

1. 0:07 – The window is plugged into the wall in the background.
2. 0:17 – “GPI bless this home” poster on the wall.
3. 0:17 – Door-blocking oboe now mounted on the wall.
4. 0:21 – Since AD rarely talks and they only have 3 mic inputs, “AH” replaces AD’s mic channel.
5. 0:29 – Jailbreak/PS Whale on the rooftop.
6. 0:30 – PS says “ansrews” in a reference to Hussie’s famous typo.
7. 1:05 – Candy Mecha in the background.
8. 1:05 – “BARD” part of “BARDQUEST” book seen at the top of the shelf.
9. ~1:06 – Pause for hidden congratulatory message on the flying, broken door.
10. 1:08 – The fan has GPI on it, implying that it is the very fan that stitched the universe back together.
11. ~1:09 onwards – Ryan is wearing the shirt he wears in “Ryanquest”.
12. 1:28 – Ryan’s glasses do the stereotypical “anime glasses thing”.
13. ~1:36 onwards – Music and textboxes are obvious Pokemon ripoffs.
14. 1:42 – Andrew’s textboxes have MSPA faces on the corners.
15. 1:58 – Ryan’s textboxes have T-Rex on the corners.
16. ~2:02 – What are those mysterious numbers/letters scrolling across the bottom of the Machine of Death’s screen? If only they could be translated somehow…
17. ~2:04 – M.O.D.’s “emanent demise imminent… surprise?” foreshadows the mortal twist at the end. “Emanent” is misspelled because I am careless. 🙁
18. 2:19 – Andrew’s shoes are “Vris Kicks”. I want some.
19. ~2:23 – M.O.D. displays “Ryan, I am afraid to die”, paralleling Lil Hal and Dirk (HS page 007542)
20. ~2:24 – Obscured until now, the M.O.D.’s build is 6.7.5, since Dinosaur Comic 675 introduced the M.O.D.
21: 2:31 – Andrew has Lord English eyes.
22. ~2:53 – Extremely subtle reference to Code Geass music in the 6-note violin line. Does this even count?
23. ~3:00 – The arrow ==-> is used since there are 5 characters in the comic.
24. ~3:00 – The links in the LATEST PAGES on the right have several things. See one of the storyboard images above.
25. ~3:03 onwards – Faygo.
26. 3:05 – “Need for Steed”.
27. 3:05 onwards – Andrew is left-handed, as he is in real life.
28. 3:05 onwards – Music and death sequence are obvious ripoffs of the “Potato Chip” scene from Death Note
29. 3:21 – Several things on Hussie’s customized right-click menu.
30. ~3:28 – “There will be blood tonight,” is an Inigo Montoya quote from “The Princess Bride”.
31. ~3:34 – Pen is drawing in his characters’ blood. Probably too way subtle, as it’s just red.
32. 3:38 – Dead PS pose is similar to dead Eridan pose.
33. ~4:13 – Nic Cage, obviously.
34. 4:13 – Yes, it is 4:13 long this time. You’re welcome.
35. Did you see the pumpkin? What pumpkin, you ask?

BONUS - Forgotten/Obscured References and Inconsistencies

~1:04 – Fake Hussie’s audio track continues to say “That’s 413 [Yellow Yard Drive]” but the end is inaudible because of the crash from the door-breaking.
~2:19 – The room is supposed to have a white dividing railing running around it as shown in all other shots. Here on the far left, I didn’t extend said railing long enough past the bookshelf, so there’s a weird line.
~3:37 – Though Real/Big Hussie deleted the door already, it the blurred background behind Ryan’s poor, severed head shows the open doorway. I noticed this before uploading but was too lazy and couldn’t justify another export to fix.
~3:41 onward – I was planning to have a picture of an owl in the far background behind Vriska, implying the Rachel/softowl connection. However, in my rush/excitement that I was finally on the last scene of this thing, I sadly forgot this until too late.

Here’s another one that wouldn’t merit an entry normally but has one quirk that gets it a spot. This time, it’s a look at the crude notation I use for remembering the timing of lyrics: downward-facing arrows, underlines, and numbers to indicate beats.
